Dr. Tobias Nanz

Tobias Nanz is a specialist in cultural and media studies. From 2001 to 2008 he worked as research assistant in the Faculty of Media of the Bauhaus University in Weimar and from 2004-05 he was a Junior Fellow of the International Research Centre for Cultural Studies (IFK) in Vienna. After receiving his doctorate, he held a replacement position in Weimar as junior professor in the media history of science. From 2009 to 2011 he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Graduate School “Transnational Media Events” at the Justus-Liebig-University in Giessen, following which he moved to the University of Erfurt, where he was a postdoctoral fellow in the Graduate School “Media Historiographies” (Weimar/Jena /Erfurt) and also taught in the general and comparative literature program. Since January 2013 he has been working in the ERC project “The Principle of Disruption”.

Outline of Research

Tobias Nanz is researching the history of the “red phone”, the supposed hotline between Washington and Moscow. The point of departure is the consideration that the famous apparatus constitutes a hybrid object of knowledge, where its materiality is mixed with fact and fiction. In reality, the red phone never existed as a direct line between the USA and the USSR, and when it first appeared in literature and film it was still relatively amorphous and insignificant. Only thanks to an increased production of signs, symbolic attributions narrative strategies and rhetorical figures was the notorious Cold War apparatus constituted, which as a discursive object in turn provides specific information on a form of knowledge characteristic of the period. The history of the red phone also deals with the hotline that was established in the form of a telegraph connection after the Cuban missile crisis and used in certain emergencies by Washington and Moscow. The research looks into the question of the discourses that shaped and traversed the two communication media and what role they played in fictional as well as real crises. Thus the research is centred on minor and major, fictional and real incidents of disruption: a computer calculation error or an operating error on the part of an officer, a blown fuse or diplomatic harassment figure among the irregularities for which the red phone was invented, so as to de-escalate the crises between the Cold War blocks.
